Name of Centre: Hisar

Year of Start: 1971-72

University/Department

Deptt. Of Genetics and Plant Breeding, CCS HAU, Hisar

Importance of centre and mandate

Hisar centre is actively coordinating whaet and barley research with the ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research,Karnal  in multidisciplinary and multilocational testing of varieties, newly developed improved genotypes, crop management and crop protection technologies for diverse ecological situation for increasing and stabilizing the wheat and barley protection.  At Hisar centre all trails of all the disciplines are conducted every year.  The centre very actively coordinate and participate in all scientific activities undertaken by ICAR-IIWBR.  Research capabilities and facilities have been strengthened by the support provided under AICRP at Hisar centre and it has come out with the release of number of improved varieties and genetic stocks.

Mandate of the centre

The Hisar Centre is actively engaged in Wheat and Barley research by way of:

  • Coordinating a multi-disciplinary, multilocational applied research and testing programme for Wheat and Barley improvement at the national level.
  • To identify improved Wheat and Barley varieties combining high yield with superior grain quality, resistance to diseases and insect-pests and adaptability over a wide range of culture practices such as sowing time, fertilizer level and water management etc.
  • To develop wheat and barley production and protection technologies and monitor crop situation.
  • To enrich genetic variability of the breeding centre by way of utilizing of diverse germplasm from various exotic sources and developed through indigenous efforts.
  • To collaborate with national and international agencies in their scientific training programmes.
  • Nucleus seed production of wheat and barley verities and to monitor its quality.
  • To help in organization and monitoring of front line demonstration and extension education programmes for proper transfer of improved technology.
  • To utilize off-season nursery facilities for rapid generation advancement, seed multiplication as well as screening against rusts.
