Importance of Centre & Mandate

With the inception of Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SKUAST) in 1983, an AICW&BIP was established at Shalimar, Srinagar to undertake the research work on wheat.  The regional research station R.S. Pura was nominated as one of the testing centres that too on Voluntary basis without any financial assistance.  Duringthe initial years of its establishment, the research work on improvement of wheat started through the collection of landraces and their purification.  At the same time a number of already released varieties of different centres/ states were identified/ recommended for general cultivation in entire Jammu region on the basis of multi-location testing.  Under the long term programme, the wheat germplasm from different countries of the world was received.  Systematic wheat improvement programme was initiated with research and extension activities at R.S .Pura in the discipline of – plant breeding, agronomy, plant pathology and entomology.  This has over years consistently improved and we have been able to develop location specific varieties to centre the needs of the farmers like RSP 303, RSP 81, RSP 561to name a few.  A series of entries are under testing at different stages under All India Coordinated Wheat Improvement programme which depicts the efforts of the scientists involved in wheat improvement programme.

Jammu region is bestowed with diverse agro climatic conditions ranging from subtropical to intermediate to temperate areas.  The foothills of Shivalik in the sub-tropical zone to the mid hills of Rajaouri and the temperate region of Bhaderwah.  This makes the region unique in its potential to be used for carrying out scientific research for different ecologies niches for wheat.  Jammu, Kathua, Samba have ecology similar to that of the North Western Plain Zones of India while Rajouri has ecology similar to Northern hills Zones of India.  Bhaderwah can finely cater the need of advancing breeding generations and can servs as off season nursery.

Mandate of Wheat Research at SKUAST, Jammu

  • Evaluation of All India Coordinated Trials in Wheat
  • Utilization of unexplored and National / International germplasm of wheat breeding for yield enhancement, resistance to biotic stresses and quality.
  • Preparing wheat for climate change. Breeding for terminal heat tolerance and unexpected evolution of new races of pathlogens/pests.
  • Augmenting wheat breeding research by the biotechnological tools.
  • Nucleus and Breeder seed Production.
  • On-farm testing and frontline demonstration of improved varieties.
  • Human resource development in the area of wheat breeding.
