About the centre

Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops, Khudwani is located on National Highway 44 at 34°09’N latitude, 74°79E longitude and 1690 m above mean sea level in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

This centre typically falls in the high hills temperate zone of the state. The centre was established in 1942 as Rice Research Station which was renamed as Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops, Khudwani in 2010

The centre has well equipped facilities for conducting Research & Extension activities. The centre has 20 ha research cum demonstration farm for the conduct of trials etc. The scheme has led to the release of wheat varieties Shalimar wheat 1 (SKW-196) and Shalimar wheat-2 (SKW-355). The Centre is a hot spot for yellow rust disease.  IVTs and AVTs of Wheat and nurseries (NGSN, SDN, SSN) are screened for yield and other traits every year in this centre

  •  Evaluation of different wheat and barley (IVT & AVT) coordinated trials.
  • Evaluation of Wheat Nurseries (NGSN, SDN, SSN
  • Development of wheat varieties having high yield, early maturity and yellow rust resistance to fit in the rice wheat cropping rotation in Kashmir valley.
