Importance of centre and mandate
The centre’s primary constituency is Punjab State which continues to be the flagship of wheat production in the country. Since the inception of the University in 1962, the centre has developed 58 varieties of wheat and barley, 40 of them being released at national level. The wheat and barley improvement program at this centre was initially supported exclusively by the State Government since 1962. Subsequently, additional support came from ICAR-AICRP after being included as a funded centre for wheat since 1970-71 and for barley since 2012-13 (implemented in 2015-16). The research mandate is focused on genetic up–gradation in productivity, disease resistance, quality, and adaptation to resource conservation technologies. Major part of this mandate caters to irrigated, timely sown conditions (mainly wheat-rice rotation) followed by the irrigated, late sown (wheat – cotton) and a small rain fed constituency (~ 1%) in the foothills. In addition, durum wheat improvement is also being pursued to cater to the industrial processing rather than as diversification option while focus on barley is now equally divided between feed, food and malt types.
