Mahableswar

Name of the centre: Regional Wheat Rust Research Station, Mahabaleshwar, Dist. Satara-412 806 (MS)

Year: March, 1971

University: Mahatma Phule Agricultural University, Rahuri, Dist. Ahmednagar (MS)

Importance of centre:

Regional Wheat Rust Research Station was started at Mahabaleshwar, Dist. Satara in the year 1941 under a wheat research scheme financed by the then Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and the State Government.

Initially, it was meant to cater the needs of the former Bombay state and Central Province in testing wheat genotypes against stem rust, but later on, it has extended the benefits to the adjoining states. Thus, at present, it helps the wheat breeders of Maharashtra and remaining states in India in evolving rust resistant varieties.

Every year thousands of wheat genotypes are screened at adult plant stage against stem and leaf rusts in field under artificially created epiphytotic condition during Rabi season.

All India Co-ordinated wheat Improvement project was started in the year 1971. Since then, under various trials, nearly 2500 wheat genotypes were tested every year against stem and leaf rusts in field during Rabi season received from the project Director, Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal (Haryana). Various pre-release wheat genotypes were tested in glasshouse for seeding resistance test against individual pathotypes of stem and leaf rusts and for adult plant resistance test against specific pathotypes of stem rust, under glass house conditions. Analyzed stem and leaf rust affected samples collected/received during every year in glasshouse for detecting pathotypes.

Mandate:

  1. To maintain pathotypes of stem and leaf rusts of wheat in pure form under glass house conditions.
  2. To monitor the pathotypes of stem and leaf rusts of wheat prevalent in Peninsular India.
  3. To multiply and supply viable inoculums of stem and leaf rusts to wheat breeders and wheat pathologists of Maharashtra and adjoining states.
  4. To test wheat genotypes and hybrid cultures received from the project Director, Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal and wheat breeders of Maharashtra, Karnataka and IARI, New Delhi against stem and leaf rusts of wheat and thereby assist the breeders in evolving rust resistant varieties.
  5. To undertake Seedling Resistant Test (SRT) against individual pathotypes of stem and leaf rust of wheat.
  6. To provide the information of resistant donors to wheat breeders.
