Importance of the Centre:

The implementation of AICW&BIP at RARS, Shillongani has been playing the major role in improvement of productivity of wheat in Assam. This is the only Wheat research station of the state as well as of the N-E Region. The project results in the popularity of wheat in the districts of Nagaon, Morigaon, Barpeta, Darrang, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Dhubri etc. these few districts are playing the major role in the state road map of wheat.

The mandates of the centre are the varietal improvement, management practices and pests and disease control of wheat under All India Co-coordinated Wheat Improvement Programme. One of the major objectives of All India Co-coordinated Wheat Improvement Programme at Regional Agricultural Research Station, AAU Shillongani, and Assam is to identify / develop varieties relevant to production technologies suitable for the state. The aim and objective of the programme is to increase wheat production through appropriate research works and co-coordinate approach by avoiding wide fluctuation caused by unfavorable climate, pest and other problems.

Mandated :

  1. To study performance of developed wheat varieties under the agro-climatic conditions
  2. To study exotic & indigenous germplasm for resistance to pest- disease & other characters.
  3. To identify of variety for:
    • Early maturity
    • Drought tolerance
    • High yielding & good quality
    • Late sown conditions
    • Thermo – insensitivity
    • Dormancy to pre- harvest sprouting
    • Identify pest / disease resistant variety
    • Easily threshable & good storage capability
    • Management responsiveness
    • Suitability for rain Fed as well as limited irrigated condition
    • Suitability at different locations of the region/ state
  4. To increase the productivity through improved cultural & resource management.
